Is there any way that the latency of U-verse (internet) can be decreased? I always get in the 50-60ms ping times, with 20ms just to the first hop outside my RG. I think it may have something to do with the VDSL being on the interleaved channel versus the fast channel, but I am not sure this is the root of the problem, but it probably adds some latency.

I always hate having high ping times in games, then booted because it isn't below x ms, even though I have a really fast connection. I actually kind of miss my ping timings in the teens like I had with cable, even though the speed wasn't as fast as U-verse is. Basically, when I got U-verse, I traded low latency for faster speeds, even though I would prefer both.

I understand the interleaved channel gives higher reliability while sacrificing latency, but would there be a way to customize which channel to use per customer based on their max sync? I am not 100% sure how the Alcatel DSLAM would handle this, but it could be something to look into.

How do I find out the latency of the first hop outside the RG?

You can run a trace route (Start -> Run -> type 'CMD' -> type 'tracert google.com' (or whatever other site you want) without the ') to your favorite website, then look at the first address outside of your WAN IP (usually the gateway IP that shows up in the RG's internet information), and there should be some times in ms there. Once you get that address, you can ping it to get a more accurate number.

Try pinging the IP address that shows up as the default gateway on this page: http://192.168.1.254/xslt?PAGE=B02

27ms. Wow, I have very high latency. You said you had a tech over. Did he help with the latency?

Actually, I never had a tech out for the latency issues, the tech I mentioned earlier was my install tech.

I did put a call in and got forwarded to a tier 2 tech on this issue about a month ago. He said there was nothing he could do...and he told me it was probably just the server I was trying to use, and to try a different one. I doubt it is the server, as every speedtest server gives me high latency. Heck, even to their own gateway I get high latency...

There is a website called 2wire.com that will give you a thru put in megabits per your connection. If you are in the range you have subscribed for your good to go. If not call ATT. Paste this into your browser address.

Throughput and latency are two different things, although in some cases, one can influence the other. The latency deal is nothing 2wire can fix, as it is not their network that is at fault here.

I use speedtest.net for my speedtests BTW.
